Overview

Please take a moment to listen to your animated companion’s suggestions. Then, head over to the Ship’s Healing Bay. • Take the aft stairwell to Deck 3. The Healing Bay is immediately to your left, the first door as you descend the stairs.

Chapter Instructions, Continued

There are some videos to watch and some notes to read. There is also a link to herbal teas for insomnia research. Sleeping on the ship can be difficult some nights, so keep the recipes for when you feel restless. Download your Practical Potion’s Journal for exercises.  You may wish to create your healing, aromatic kit.

Essential oils are handy in your home and car to add to your first aid kit for day-to-day and emergency healing situations. Of course, seeking medical help as soon as possible for health problems is a good idea, but it is nice to have some healing tools available for emergencies. Some medical professionals in France use aromatherapy, and more disinfecting and healing uses are constantly being uncovered.

Please remember the universal cautions. Do not use essential oils while pregnant or breastfeeding with babies, pets, or anyone who is allergic or sensitive. Always dilute essential oils before putting them on the skin. Do not ingest essential oils. Do not use certain essential oils with epilepsy, asthma, pregnancy or allergies. Never delay seeking medical help for yourself, your children, or your clients.

A Review of  Common Essential Oils To Use In Your Kit– (But, remember the cautions for children, pets, etc.)

Essential oils are an excellent natural tool for addressing a variety of everyday ailments and first-aid situations. It’s critical, however, to use them correctly and be aware of the scientific backing for their uses. Here’s a detailed yet accessible guide on how to incorporate essential oils into day-to-day first aid based on scientific research:

Lavender Oil for Minor Burns and Cuts: Lavender oil is renowned for its soothing properties and can aid in healing minor burns and cuts. A study published in the journal “Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine” highlighted lavender’s antimicrobial and healing properties, making it an excellent choice for minor skin injuries. Apply 1-2 drops of lavender and carrier oil to the affected area to reduce inflammation and promote healing.

Tea Tree Oil for Acne and Antiseptic Needs: Tea tree oil has potent antibacterial and antiseptic properties, effectively treating acne and cleaning wounds. The “Journal of Applied Microbiology” reported that tea tree oil could inhibit the growth of bacteria, suggesting its usefulness in first aid for cleaning cuts and scrapes. Dilute tea tree oil with a carrier oil before applying it to the skin to prevent irritation.

Peppermint Oil for Headaches and Nausea: Peppermint oil can be a natural remedy for headaches and nausea. An “International Journal of Clinical Practice” study found that peppermint oil applied to the forehead and temples significantly reduced headache intensity. For nausea, inhaling peppermint oil can offer relief, as supported by research in the “Journal of Advanced Nursing.” Peppermint applied to bruises reduces pain.

Eucalyptus Oil for Respiratory Issues: Eucalyptus oil is known for its ability to help clear congestion and ease breathing. The “Journal of Ethnopharmacology” notes its anti-inflammatory properties, which can be beneficial for treating respiratory conditions. Inhaling steam with a few drops of eucalyptus oil or diluting it on the chest can help alleviate congestion.

Chamomile Oil for Stress and Sleep Issues: Chamomile oil, mainly Roman chamomile, is well-documented for its calming effects, which can aid in stress relief and promote better sleep. Research published in the “Molecular Medicine Reports” indicates its potential in reducing anxiety and improving sleep quality. Dilute chamomile oil in a carrier oil for topical application or use it in a diffuser to create a calming environment.

Ginger Oil for Digestive Discomfort: Ginger oil can help alleviate symptoms of indigestion and nausea. A study in the “World Journal of Gastroenterology” suggests ginger’s effectiveness in easing gastrointestinal issues. Massaging diluted ginger oil on the abdomen can provide relief from discomfort.

Helichrysum Oil for Bruises and Inflammation: Helichrysum oil is acclaimed for its anti-inflammatory properties, which can benefit bruises, swelling, and inflammation. A study in the “Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology” supports its use in reducing inflammation. Applying diluted helichrysum oil to affected areas can help accelerate healing.

When using essential oils for first aid, always remember to:

Conduct a patch test to ensure no allergic reactions. Keep essential oils away from infants and pets. Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding.
Dilute essential oils with a carrier oil (like coconut, almond, or jojoba oil) to minimize skin sensitivity.
Consult with a healthcare provider, especially for severe conditions.
By integrating these essential oils into your first aid kit, you can harness the power of nature to address common health concerns safely and effectively.

Herbal Tea for Insomnia:

Although teas are an herbal, not aromatic, subject, they are such a mild and effective way to improve health that I couldn’t resist adding them to the course. Insomnia is a problem for so many people so much of the time. Here is a link to a good article on the subject – Sleep Teas

Pleasure Cruise Students

From this point on, the lessons in the Practical Potions Course will involve assignments. Each exercise holds the key to deeper learning. As Pleasure Cruise Adventurers, you will have the choice of reading the assignments. However, you don’t need to do them.

If you want to continue with the assignments and become certified, you may ask Robert or Laurie about the content. Catherine will help you with the administrative details of changing your status from the Pleasure Cruise to the Apprentice Ship Program.

It has indeed been a joy to have you on board!

Apprentice Ship Adventure Students- your learning will deepen at this point. You can implement the theory with the following lessons!
